General Chemistry Undergraduate Teaching

General Chemistry UTA Qualifications:

  • Be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior.
  • Have completed CHEM 0110 and CHEM 0120 (or equivalent courses) by the end of the current term, with good grades.
  • Show enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring fellow students.

General Chemistry Departmental UTA Opportunities

  • UTA Active Learning Facilitator: Collaborate with a lecture professor to guide students through active learning activities. Availability for class and a weekly meeting (usually Thursdays, 4-5 p.m.) is required.
  • UTU Laboratory Co-teacher: Work alongside a laboratory instructor to supervise students in lab sessions. Availability for one lab session per week and the weekly lab meeting (usually Thursday afternoon) is required.
  • UTA Laboratory Developer: This two-semester role begins with serving as a UTA for a general chemistry lab, where you’ll brainstorm ways to enhance the lab experience. In the second semester, you’ll develop and test new or revised experiments. Availability for lab meetings on Thursday afternoons is required.

Faculty: Faculty who have used UTA Active Learning Facilitators, UTU Laboratory Co-teacher, UTA Laboratory Developer in the past.

Application Deadlines and Notification:

Application Deadline: One week before the last day of classes of the previous semester (Fall or Spring).

Notification: Acceptance notification will be sent no later than one week after the end of exams.

General Chemistry Instructor-Specific UTA Positions

Some instructors may seek UTAs for roles such as Recitation Co-teachers or Review Session Peer-Leaders. Interested applicants should directly contact instructors in their course area.

  • Recitation Co-teacher: Assist in co-teaching a recitation section. Availability for one recitation session per week and related meetings (or lectures) is required.
  • Review Session Peer-Leader: Lead a weekly review session for lecture courses, with availability for weekly review meetings and/or lecture attendance.
  • Faculty: Faculty who have used UTA Recitation Co-teacher, or  UTA Review Session Peer-Leader in the past.
