Alex Crane
On a beautiful Saturday evening in April 2023, we celebrated the achievements of fifty-three undergraduate chemistry majors. Among this crowd of new Bachelor of Science degree students was Alex Crane. Alex received his degree with the bioscience option and both university and departmental honors. He was also the 2023 co-recipient of our department’s Phillips Medal, along with Matt Liberatore, which recognizes students that graduate at the top of their senior class. In addition to this strong academic performance, Alex was very involved outside of the classroom setting. He carried out undergraduate research under the direction of Dr. Cynthia St. Hilaire of the Vascular Medicine Institute for three years. In support of this work, Alex received the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences’ Summer Undergraduate Research Award. He also spent many terms serving as a peer leader and laboratory instructor in organic chemistry.
Alex was co-president of our nationally recognized American Chemical Society Student Affiliates group along with Shahd Habib. In this role, he helped plan the academic year schedule and also volunteered for many outreach efforts. He is currently a first-year medical student at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. Alex says that he smiles when he remembers the time spent with his fellow classmates trying to understand quantum chemistry or troubleshoot the HPLC.
We hope that of our graduates have fond memories of their time spent in Chevron and wish them the best in their future endeavors.
