A research team led by Prof. Alexander Star in the Department of Chemistry and Prof. Gaurav Chauhan from the Department of Anesthesiology in the School of Medicine have received a grant from the University of Pittsburgh Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) to fund the development of a naloxone patch with biofeedback capabilities. The envisioned device has the potential to help prevent opioid overdose and address shortcomings of other forms of naloxone administration. The grant, titled “BIONIC: Naloxone Biofeedback Patch,” was awarded as part of the CTSI’s Innovation Challenge program, which seeks to generate creative solutions to significant problems in public health by supporting high-risk / high-reward projects during the earliest stages of their implementation.
