Title: "Generating enzymatically active artificial proteins using large language models"

Abstract: AI models like AlphaFold have enabled us to "read" the genome and produce predictions of the three dimensional structures of proteins. The inverse challenge, "writing"  protein sequences that do not exist in nature is the domain of protein design. While several models now exist to architect proteins with specific structures, the generation of functional enzymes has remained a challenge. We used deep-learning language models for the controllable generation of artificial enzymes that show catalytic efficiencies as natural lysozymes. These generative-AI technologies will have wide applications in biotechnology and medicine.
