Postdoc position open at Texas State University

The Irvin Research Group in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Texas State University has an immediate opening for a talented and passionate Postdoctoral Scholar. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to use their expertise to develop and apply the latest advancements in electroactive polymer nanocomposites.


The successful candidate will have expertise in organic synthesis and characterization (especially in the area of conjugated organic heterocycles) and in one or more of the following areas: polymer synthesis, polymer processing, electrochemistry, and/or electrospinning. The Postdoctoral Scholar will work on independent and collaborative projects in the area of electroactive polymer nanocomposites in applications such as nerve regeneration, water purification, energy storage, and electrochemical sensors. The Postdoctoral Scholar will conduct research, interpret results, prepare manuscripts, aid in the preparation of grant applications, and present research results at national conferences. The Postdoctoral Scholar will work with a group of doctoral, masters, and undergraduate researchers in materials science and engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, and biology. The applicant should have a good command of written and spoken English, good interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, critical thinking ability, and good writing skills as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals. The applicant should also be proficient in computer software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and ChemDraw.


The target start date is flexible but preferably as soon as possible for a 1-year contract with the potential for performance-based renewal.


Required qualifications include:
• Recent Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to conduct research independently and in groups
• Experience in preparing scientific publications


Preferred qualifications include:
• Working knowledge of airless synthesis, spectroscopy (NMR, IR, and UV-Vis), oxidative polymerization, graft copolymerization, polymer characterization, scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and/or electrospinning
• Experience in preparing scientific research proposals
• Strong problem-solving skills and research creativity
