Job Description:

The Chemistry Department at Carleton College seeks applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning September 1, 2024. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and research with undergraduate students in a liberal arts environment. We seek candidates with expertise in experimental physical chemistry, broadly defined, including those with interdisciplinary interests in areas such as materials science, biophysical chemistry, and environmental science. We are particularly interested in candidates who can help further our community goals in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, and respect, including through a commitment to inclusive excellence in their teaching. A completed Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field with postdoctoral experience is preferred, but all applicants who will complete their Ph.D. by September 2024 will be considered.

The position will involve teaching five courses per year within our trimester system, including regular contributions to the “Principles of Chemistry” series and upper-level physical chemistry (Chemical Thermodynamics and/or Quantum Chemistry as well as laboratories in kinetics and spectroscopy). The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to develop an advanced course related to their areas of expertise and research strengths. All laboratory courses benefit from the support of skilled technical staff.

Chemistry faculty are expected to develop an active research program with Carleton undergraduates that contributes to their sub-field. The College offers a range of support for faculty research programs, including student stipends, support for grant writing, and science-wide programing for students. In addition, support for all aspects of faculty work at Carleton is provided by long-standing College and Department mentoring programs, cohort activities for new faculty, Provost's Office support, and extensive optional programming by our Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching.

Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a curious and enthusiastic student body of approximately 2,000 undergraduates. We are committed to cultivating a welcoming, supportive, and diverse community, including meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need for all students, with 58% of students receiving need-based grants and scholarships. Of our domestic students, 32% identify as people of color; an additional 11% of students come from outside the United States. Located in the thriving two-college town of Northfield, Minnesota, Carleton College is forty-five miles from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, within easy reach of a vibrant metropolitan area that is home to three million people and rich cultural resources.

The Chemistry Department is composed of 11 permanent faculty representing a variety of areas of research and teaching expertise, two technical staff supporting laboratory teaching and research, and an administrative assistant. We teach an engaged group of students, with approximately 35 Chemistry majors graduating each year, many of whom work for the department in a variety of teaching support roles. Our department offers many opportunities for student engagement through mentored research, a weekly seminar series, and a chemistry club that works closely with faculty and staff to coordinate department events and efforts toward creating a more inclusive community. We are primarily housed in the newly constructed Anderson Hall, part of Carleton’s Integrated Science Center, with state-of-the-art research and teaching laboratories and equipment.

To apply, please complete the online application at go.carleton.edu/carletonjobs. Your application should include: 1) a cover letter; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) a statement about teaching in an undergraduate liberal arts environment and how you would contribute to a college community that embraces a diversity of people and perspectives as one of its core values; 4) a detailed description of your plans for research with undergraduate students; and 5) undergraduate and graduate transcripts. After passing through an initial screening process, applicants may receive a request for the contact information for three references. We will contact your letter-writers directly to request their electronic submissions. Additional guidance can be found at https://www.carleton.edu/chemistry/faculty/information-for-tenure-track-... .
