Professor Jill Millstone receives NSF CAREER Award

January 16, 2013 - 5:16am

Professor Jill E. Millstone has been selected to receive a National Science Foundation CAREER award based on her proposal entitled “Surface Chemistry-Controlled Formation of Colloidal Nanoparticle Alloys.” The NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program offers the Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education, and the integration of education and research. The five-year grant will fund Millstone’s research on the development of surface-chemistry driven methods for preparing noble metal nanoparticle alloys. It has been known for centuries that alloys can transform the properties of their constituent metals. Work completed through this effort will bridge bulk and molecular concepts of alloy formation, and elucidate key relationships between alloy architecture, surface chemistry, and properties. Materials generated using these methods can exhibit a wide-range of new, composition-dependent behaviors including enhancements in optical, magnetic, and catalytic properties, making them promising for technologies ranging from bioimaging to fossil fuel conversion.
