October 8, 2019 - 9:41am

Alex Star, professor of chemistry, Sarah Wheeler, associate medical director of clinical immunopathology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and Michael Shurin, professor of pathology, created the device, HIV Detective, to determine in one minute whether patients have HIV, compared to the 24 hours it takes for conventional testing. This research team won a $100,000 grand prize from the 2019 Pitt Innovation Challenge (PInCh), hosted by Pitt’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI). The prize money will enable the researchers to create a prototype and use it for clinical trials.
