May 28, 2021 - 2:48pm

The Chemistry Department has received a $2 Million endowment from the estate of Marlene Wass to establish the Marlene P. Neidhardt Wass CAS '55 and William E. Wass Endowed Fund in Chemistry.  The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarship support for outstanding Chemistry undergraduate majors with financial needs and to support undergraduate research. The Wass family have been generous donors to our undergraduate program for a long time and every summer as many as five Wass awardees perform research with their support.

Mrs. Wass graduated from Pitt with a BS in Chemistry (Magna Cum Laude).  She retired from IT Enviroscience, Inc.  IT Enviroscience was a research and development group based out of Knoxville, TN specializing in chemical engineering. The company was absorbed by Dow Chemical Co. ca.1990.  Mrs. Wass was the co-author of several reports for the EPA generated by IT Enviroscience in the mid-1980s.
