Title: “Lessons in Chemistry: A Story of Success, Failure, and Hope at the Interface of Academic and Industrial Research”

Abstract: For the past two decades, my research group has pursued new avenues of chemical reactivity in organic synthesis with a particular focus on immediate applications in academic drug discovery and the pharmaceutical industry. Many of the reactions we have discovered involve transition metal catalysts that are utilized to dictate various aspects of small molecule synthesis with exquisite control including stereochemistry, regiochemistry, and chemoselectivity. Recently, we have combined our expertise in catalysis and drug discovery with the Chemical Process Group at Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) to co-develop new synthetic methods through a combination of high-throughput experimentation (HTE), reaction optimization, and scope exploration. These new synthetic methods along with a new mechanistic tool referred to as Direct-Inject High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (DI-HRMS) developed in our group at UTSA will be presented.
