Faculty Search: Polymer Science and Engineering @ Southern Miss

The School of Polymer Science and Engineering at the University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for two (2) nine-month tenure-track faculty positions to begin in August 2023. One position is designated at the rank of Assistant Professor and the other is designated at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Assistant/Associate Professor in Polymer Science and Engineering (Job #req3064)

A completed application will include 1) a cover letter, 2) a CV, 3) a statement of research plans, and 4) a brief statement of teaching philosophy that includes interest in specific core courses in the polymer science and engineering graduate and undergraduate curricula. Job Summary: The School of Polymer Science and Engineering (SPSE) at the University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for two (2) nine-month tenure-track faculty positions to begin in August 2023. One position is designated at the rank of Assistant Professor and the other is designated at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Applications are encouraged from exceptional candidates with research interests in any area of contemporary polymer science and engineering.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in polymer science and engineering
Build an internationally recognized research program
Supervise graduate and undergraduate student research with an emphasis on effective mentorship and professional development
Secure external funding from private, state, and federal entities to sustain a high level of research and scholarship
Contribute to the mission of the school, college, university, and scientific community through professional service
Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Earned Ph.D. in polymer science and engineering or a closely related discipline
Demonstrated record of intellectual and academic accomplishments evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, professional presentations, and/or grant submissions commensurate with rank

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to work effectively, collaboratively, and collegially with students, staff, and faculty
Commitment to enhancement of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment in which world-class faculty, staff, and students can thrive
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Skill sets associated with use and application of common equipment and instrumentation in PSE

Preferred Qualifications

Research, teaching, and/or service activities that demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Candidates with postdoctoral research experience who demonstrate strong potential to develop collaborations within SPSE and across other academic disciplines.

About the School: SPSE comprises faculty members with research programs in optoelectronic materials, polymer composites, biomaterials and bioinspired polymers, materials for energy and sustainability, and coatings and thin films with external funding totaling ~$50M over the past five years. SPSE offers state-of-the-art facilities for polymer-related research including a shared thermal/thermomechanical analysis suite, 400/600 MHz NMR spectrometers, SAXS/WAXS laboratory beamline, XPS/UPS spectrometer, magnetic characterization, AC/DC SQUID magnetometer, ESR, polymer processing (extrusion/injection molding), composite fabrication facilities, and computing capabilities. SPSE is home to ~80 Ph.D. students and ~80 undergraduate students; it offers polymer science and engineering degrees at the B.S. (ABET accredited), M.S., and Ph.D. levels.
