Facilities

State of the art equipment and more than 20 staff, instructional specialists, and technical support personnel are integral parts of the department's extensive infrastructure.

The department is equipped with a wide variety of instrumentation, including scanning tunneling microscopes; specialized instrumentation for combinatorial chemistry; nine FTIR systems; an array of ESCA, AUGER, ESDIAD, EEL, afterglow, and Raman spectrometers; a vibrating sample magnetometer; more than 30 high-power laser systems; and a full complement of standard chemical research instruments.

Shops

Three excellent shops within the Department of Chemistry ensure the high-quality design, fabrication, and repair of equipment and instrumentation.

Materials Characterization Lab

The Materials Characterization Laboratory (MCL) maintains a large array of instrumentation for the production and analysis of complex materials.

 

NMR Spectroscopy

The NMR Facility at the University of Pittsburgh Chemistry Department has six high field instruments dedicated solely to research and one for undergraduate teaching and research.

Mass Spectrometry

The Mass Spectrometry Facility at the University of Pittsburgh Chemistry Department has six state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instruments.
